I have said it 100 times. Just go back to the rule books of the 1970s. The game was simpler. The NFL has tweak the rules a thousand times to make the game safer. Where has it gotten? NOWHERE! Players are still getting hurt. It's not so much the rules as the Players getting extremely larger and MUCH faster. I still say that a lot of Players are damaged at the Pop Warner level from dangerous work outs. Today's game also has WAAAAAY too many interpretations of what a catch is, what a fumble is, what is roughing etc etc. Call the game as it's seen and move along. That leads me to......
Replay! I say either go STRICTLY to a Booth call or get rid of it. Too many Refs trying to save face. Just look at this past Sunday when the Eagles TE clearly did not have control of the ball before getting two feet in. I'd be fine if they just dump replay. It kills the flow of the game and too often, is wrong anyway.
And finally....Ask yourself. Could you REALLY do better?? Refs piss us off all the time but imagine the pressure. My ex Brother In Law (RIP) Reffed High School games about 20 years ago. Even at that level, he told me the speed of the game is a booger. Refs not only have to watch every inch but watch where THEY are to avoid interfering with the game or getting blasted by a player or the ball. Also....Compare the Microscope of 1970s football compared to today. Simply watch a Youtube video from back in the day......Questionable calls seemed to rarely happen. But if they did?? You'd see one or two replays and the Announcers and the game moved along. These days, we have a dozen replays...cameras hanging from wires and the play replayed a dozen times in super slow motion. And it's still a tough call. Imagine it in REAL time on the field! I'm basically saying......... SIMPLIFY the game again! Aside from a Ref stand point, the game itself is MUCH better.
