As a pilot I got into the habit of reading NTSB reports. I still do it to this day BUT... no where near with the keen interest sstrams has on the subject.
From what I read, and even though it was overstated in the movie, the 'key' issue was the 'human element' and factoring in human reaction time and analyzation time.... when properly accounted for the final determination was pretty as depicted in the movie, (as far as I know, and read, 'exactly' as it came down).
An 'immediate turn' is NOT the first course of action when facing a critical loss of power... it will actually decrease glide range and increase the chance of a stall. If nothing else then yeah, sure, you gotta take what fate has dealt you.
