Thoroughly enjoyed Sully. Without question the antagonism shown by the NTSB was exaggerated for effect... never the less... excellent movie.
I can't comment as a professional pilot... only a private pilot... but one of the leading causes of accidents that prove fatal is trying to take what isn't there. to do so means "stalls". I can remember during our decent, when I was in a plane crash, (both of us pilots but I was not Pilot In Command)... we both agreed, all the way down, that no matter what else.. good landing spot or not, we would fly the plane onto the ground... no stall. Pilots are trained to take what allows you to control the plane until touchdown.... wherever touchdown might occur. I don't think there is any doubt whatsoever that's exactly what Sully did.
Great acting. Very good reenactments. Definitely a thumbs up... and btw way Mama, if you read this, definitely a tear jerker. I made my granddaughter laugh.. towards the end I told her, "Sydney, I'm a little teary eyed"... she laughed and then replied, "Me too, Papa".
Now the classic... I had never seen "Anatomy of a Murder" with Jimmy Stewart, Lee Remick, Eve Arden, George C Scott, Arthur O'Connell, Ben Gazarra.. quite a cast.
This is a 'film buffs' flick. An excellent one. What I mean by that is that it's more than the story, or even the acting, but the way the movie was made - filmed, edited, etc. It's a masterpiece, IMHO.
Not a thing wrong with the story, (based on a true story), but.. and not being a lawyer I'm not qualified to critique the dialog during the trial scenes but some of it, to me, seemed a little far fetched. No matter, didn't take away from the film.
Loved seeing Eve Arden in a dramatic role... don't recall seeing her in any other dramatic role. I associate her so much with comedy that it took me a while to accept her in the part... but she did very well.
I'm a HUGE Jimmy Stewart fan... so NOT seeing this movie until today was strange. He was great, as he always is... but for me Lee Remick while not 'stealing' the show definitely stood out. The scenes of her being grilled by George C Scott were magnificent.
Epilogue... I accèss IMDB a lot.... after Google Earth, and this board, it's where I spend most of my time on the internet. It's always fun, and amazing, to read who else was considered for roles in specific movies. And more likely than not, by a good margin, it's almost impossible for me to see the actors who auditioned, or were considered, but did not get the role "in" the role. It's very rare indeed for me to conclude, "yeah, so and so would have been better". Leads me to believe that most film makers know what their doing... or did, not sure that's the case today as often as it used to be.
So ok... both good movies. I don't recommend movies, often anyway... but both these films get an avid thumbs up from me. - JamesJM
