I hate hearing stuff like this because it's all such conjecture and hard to verify. Personally I always thought Goff was plenty mobile enough for this offense. In fact I always wanted him moved around more. Work ethic, accountability? Just have to say there never anything brought up about that in his 5 years there. Was he misinterpreted for being the "laid back California kid?" Maybby LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
I haven't watched a ton of Lions games either (who has?). I will say from all I have looked at 2018 was easily Stafford's worst season and really the only one in the last 9-10 years where he was below average. I do think Stafford on this team can get them consistently to the divisional round. Beyond that? We'll see. As well all know a lot of things have to go right for a team to get to the NFby LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
He says "in 12 years, he posted a QB rating over 100 just once." Yeah, well again, just looking at the pure statistical QB rating the past 6 seasons he was 9th, 13th, 6th (in 2017, when his rating wasn't 100+ but was 99.3...), 25th, 6th and then 14th this year. He had a rough 2018 season by all counts but has been very good (not elite) otherwise.by LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
Well, I'll say this. Are some of his pure stats "padded" from garbage time games/losses? Of course. But as for the ESPN QBR the article points out (which adjusts for strength of defenses, situations, other context, etc.)? The last 5 years he's been rated 8th, 8th, 23rd, 6th and 15th. (Avg ranking: 12th) Similarly, with Football Outsiders his past 5 years he has been 9th, 10th, 2by LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
Needless to say, the Rams need to repeat this (or better) in 2021-2023.... via Pro Football Focus. 11. Los Angeles Rams Why they're ranked here: Despite the Rams having nine picks in the 2020 draft, their rookies played the fifth-fewest combined snaps among NFL teams. The group logged just over 1,400 total snaps in the regular season. And over half of those snaps played came courtesy ofby LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
Yes, I agree. And even the "everybody is getting evaluated" stuff was sort of BS because, well, everyone is not. As Rich H. and Jourdan R. said, Donald, Ramsey, Kupp, Woods, they're not "getting evaluated" as it pertains to their 2021 role. But the "right now" stuff didn't need to said. And if anything it may have contributed to the Rams losing a bit of trade leveraby LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
And I point this out with zero idea to what extent the Lions' scheme, OL, playing from behind a ton, etc. play into it. But just saying- sack percentage. The past four years Goff has been sacked 4.4%. Stafford 6.9%. That's almost 60% higher. Maybe others that have posted about seeing and knowing Stafford more can comment. Maybe, honestly, part of what attracted Stafford to McVay is feeling the syby LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
Go back and look at Lions' defensive rankings the past decade. I've looked on analytics sites like Football Outsiders and Pro Football Reference and it's not pretty. They were legit in 2014 and the Lions went 11-5. Pretty good in 2013 too. Otherwise maybe 1-2 other seasons when they were in the 15th-17th range and mostly bottom 8, including the past two seasons when they were basically worst in tby LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
The Rams other options were keeping Goff, benching him for Wolford, signing a FA like Fitzpatrick or Mariota, or drafting a QB in the late 3rd round.by LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
I think that's how I'd sum up this whole thing for me. Some people that are critical of the trade say to me "it flies in the face of having a 10-year plan for sustained success." Who the heck has a real 10-year plan? Or five years? You know what a 5-year plan is? Having a good coach and QB. The rest? TBD... Then I hear "the Rams are going all in for 2021." You know, I hearby LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
He gives Detroit options. He can come in and be an immediate competent QB for 2021 which, had they tried to look at FA QBs, would have been hard to do. And if he thrives in Detroit, great, they keep rolling with him in 2022 and 2023 while having multiple 1st round picks each year to build around him. If he's mediocre again this year then maybe they draft a QB in 2022 and he is merely a bridge guyby LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
My opinion on Gurley is- and even was back then- that they should have played out the 5 years and then, IF he was still at a high level, franchise him for a 6th season. Would he have held out? Who knows. But in this day and age I am NEVER paying top dollar to a RB after his 7th season. I don't care who it is. The history of the NFL shows that most star RBs begin to fade- and quickly- by year 7. 8by LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
"Just watching the Rams this year compared to 2018 is really startling. I remember the Goff coming-out party. It happened on a September Thursday night in the Coliseum. Goff shredded the Vikings with all kinds of throws, starting with a beautiful deep ball up the right seam to Cooper Kupp for a long TD. And the best ball I remember ever seeing Goff throw—I can still see it now, a 47-year TDby LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
...is the deals being given TWO years ahead of time to Austin, Gurley and then Goff. Major mistakes. Austin, frankly, in my mind was 50/50 to even deserve his 5th year option for 2017 (given after a decent 2015 season). But OK, fine, give him that. Rams would have been free and clear of him after 2017. Gurley? Never should have happened when it did. Should have given him his 5th year option fby LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
Hope he does well and continues a long and successful career. He did A LOT of really good things for this franchise and helped elevate them out of the basement. He finishes his Rams career top 5 in about every franchise passing category. In 2017 and 2018 he was not along for the ride, he helped lead them to their success.by LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
Appreciate it because admittedly other than games the Rams play vs DET and other random Thursday night or Thanksgiving Day games I have never watched Stafford that closely. I do think fit matters. And I can absolutely see how he fits the Rams scheme. The Goff extension- doing it when they did vs after the 2019 season- was a huge mistake. No question. But to your point that does not mean yby LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
I think career numbers are less important because, well, first off I would not include anything about 2016 in assessing Goff. And with Stafford what he did as a rookie, in 2011, 2013, etc does not matter much to me either. Compare the past 4 years. I looked it up last night and I believe the QB rating is 96.8 for Stafford and 94.1 for Goff. Difference being MS has been pretty consistent whileby LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
His INT percentage the past four years is lower than JG. I think thats important here.. His TD pct is higher too. Again, 2017 through 2020.by LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com

And I'd place Edge WAY above ILB as a need. Both because of what they already have at ILB and the relative importance/impact for the defense. Sure, the Rams have Hollins, Lewis and Okoronkwo returning but collectively 15 of the 21 sacks, 14 of 20 TFL and 26 of 38 QB hits the Rams got off the edge this year have to be replaced with Floyd and Ebukam departing. That's two guys that gave them 70%by LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
I think center is the "gaping hole" for them right now for the reasons you outline. Even at DB, yeah, they need to replace Hill (Long?) but when you are starting at CB with Ramsey and Williams you're doing OK... Same at safety where it's a shame Johnson goes but they have Fuller, Burgess, Rapp and Scott all under contract through 2022. One thing your list made me think about isby LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
And when I say 'resigned' I mean us as fans, not the team. We all love when free agency starts and hitting refresh on web pages and social media to see what OUR team is doing next. It's fun. And frankly Rams fans have become used to being in the limelight of those dialogues since 2017. But sometimes you have to be OK not being the darling of the offseason and working on what you have. And let's bby LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
I would jump at Humphrey at #57, let alone after trading back twice like in this. In the case of Harris at RB not a position I would target but he was rated the 68th best overall player on their Board and at #88 that's a good value choice.by LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
The Goff situation aside, to me it is simply a matter of some years you can make big headline, "splash" moves/deals and some years you cannot. For 2021 the Rams have to tighten their belts a bit. That's all. To me that means (a) being resigned to the fact that Johnson, Floyd and Hill leave- and that compensatory picks will come back in 2022 for them. (b) 2021 free agency for theby LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
Here's mine. Admittedly I know very little about any of these guys yet....by LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
There should be something. Either a rule that a team can block moves if they have already lost 3 coaches in one offseason. Or some sort of compensatory draft compensation.by LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
If the Rams can go to him as their 3rd CB this year it would really help given their limited 2021 resources. He was never thought of as a guy that was going to come in and seize a job early on but going into year 3 the time is now. He's played 225 snaps on defense in two years. 10+ snaps in a game 6 times. I view him along the lines of Hopkins, Anchrum, and Jefferson that making a big step foby LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
For sure. After all, developing the QBs is one of McVays biggest jobs. But again, there may be other issues behind the scenes we just do not know about. Gurley? Absolutely a mistake extending him when they did. I will say this on Cooks. That trade is still TBD. The way I see it that 23rd pick netted two years of Cooks plus four years of Van Jefferson. So well see how VJ develops and produceby LMU93 - RamsFootballFans.com
Agree 100%. And part of the "sense of urgency" may have to do with Kupp and Woods being in their prime. For whatever reason(s), they were not used the way those two can and need to be used in 2020. To me that is the crux of the argument. Well not really argument- the questions. WHY was the offense so scaled back (meaning pretty much everything within 10 yards of the LOS)?
