The Goff situation aside, to me it is simply a matter of some years you can make big headline, "splash" moves/deals and some years you cannot. For 2021 the Rams have to tighten their belts a bit. That's all.
To me that means
(a) being resigned to the fact that Johnson, Floyd and Hill leave- and that compensatory picks will come back in 2022 for them.
(b) 2021 free agency for the Rams might be "boring"- re-sign McQuaide, 1st round RFA tender for Williams, maybe re-sign Fox, sign a couple '2nd wave' outside free agents- and not a lot more.
(c) some guys- like even Hekker for one- need to get the message that, hey, if things don't improve from 2020 we won't be keeping you around in 2022.
Let Whitworth play in 2021 and then the save $10.5M in 2022 when he retires. Similarly keep Brockers for 2021 and then save $9M in 2022. Havenstein? TBD.
They are going to have to restructure Donald's deal regardless, which is fine. Do that, let those guys leave, plan for 2022 without Whitworth and Brockers and they will be back in the middle of the pack in 2022 cap space AND have all their Draft picks plus multiple extra comp picks.
But again, get comfortable with 2021 being a relatively "boring" offseason. Has to happen...
