During covid, they weren't allowed to have ANY customers, so (and I'll use my hometown theaters as examples) they went almost a full year with NO customers allowed in their buildings.. during that year they still had to pay taxes, utilities and whatever else with ZERO money coming in.. I honestly don't know how both local theaters (one is 12 screen, the other similar) stayed in business.. we didn't wanna lose them, because there's nothing else to do here.. So, we've supported them as much as possible..
Sure, we sneak in snacks, but we still give them a ton of business cuz we like going out and don't wanna lose that option.. I know part of the reason they charge so much for snacks is because they just don't have enough revenue coming in to stay open.. its definitely not a case - at least here - that they're rolling in dough.. none of us can understand how they've stayed open this long with the challenges they've faced..
But, yeah, I can see your point and with streaming and all that, I can see them potentially going out of business before too long..
