Apparently there is a lot of stuff expelled from a "prop" gun using blanks that is dangerous to anyone near the barrel.

I also read someplace that the "cost" of using a prop gun (i.e. real gun but with blanks) is a lot cheaper than using technology to simulate gunfire-hence the issue of cost cutting arises. OTOH while technology created gunfire doesn't require "gun safety experts" on hand at the time of shooting the prop gun is still a gun and still projects bad stuff with an explosion so safety experts need to be on the set during the shoot. I think that is something that may have been missing at the time of this fatality.
