Remember the scene when Kate Capshow had to wade and reach into the hole filled with insects the size of a house cat? That happened to me.
We were hunting in the Kaibab, (on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon).... and had just finished our hunt for the day and were just lighting our lanterns at our campsite when suddenly...
Insects started swarming... a gajillion of them... so thick in the air and on everything that it blurred your vision. It was a cloud of insects, different species but mostly HUGE... and very, very ugly and scary looking.
This continued every night we were there... but it only lasted a minute or so? And always at precisely the same time in the evening. On the third night and the rest of the nights we took cover until it passed.
I don't think any of them 'sting'... at least we didn't get stung.... but I would still suggest taking cover if you're ever in that area camping. - JamesJM
