I had to totally change my diet for about 2 years when I thought I had interstitial cystitis.... that in the end turned out to be bladder cancer. Foods I had to eliminate: (not cut down... cut OUT)
coffee, tea, alcohol, soft drinks
chocolate, cocoa
all condiments .. because every one of them has vinegar or lemon (mustard, ketchup, mayo, salad dressing, bbq sauce, etc)
citrus (oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit)
aged cheeses
processed meats
smoked or marinated meats
soy and soy sauce
food preservatives
tomatoes and tomato products
artificial sweeteners
artificial flavorings
hot spices (chili powder, cayenne pepper)
I was not a happy camper. But once I accepted the fact that this was my new normal, I began to look forward to the challenge of finding recipes and foods I COULD eat safely. It wasn't easy but I managed and once I got used to this new diet, it was no longer a burden. It actually became kind of fun to collect all these really cool recipes that I never would have tried had it not been for my diagnosis. Frank was a real trooper in that he was always willing to try some of the recipes with me even though he didn't have to. I gotta tell you... some were downright delicious! No, I could no longer have my favorite foods anymore but I discovered some new dishes, working with different seasonings, which were satisfying, too.
I know this is not ideal but put your health first and you can do this. I'm rootin' for you!
