I just spent several days driving across the prairies up here, I’ve done the drive once before, but never really thought about all the cattle that I saw along the way. The fields that surround the Trans Canada Highway are massive and seemingly never ending. I noticed that many herds were gathered around shrinking ponds near fence lines or in the shade of lone stand of trees. These fields would spread to the horizon without a barn in sight. As a result I had no clue where their “home base” was located. Here’s my question - and please excuse my ignorance as I know very little about cows - do cattle just stay out all day and never return to a barn? I see cattle where I live, but the fields are mulch smaller and I can see the barns from the road, so I always assumed that’s where they stay at night. You have posted pictures of mountain lions in your area, so I assume that cattle farmers worry about predators. It puzzles me how this works, James. What happens with the cows at night? If there is a barn, how the heck do they get them back there? It has to be kilometres away from what I could see.
