Several years ago a close friend of mine was hosting a wedding reception for his son and his bride at their house on the beach near Cabo Literally hundreds of people were invited. People flew from all over. We flew down from San Diego. Get to the airport and take a rental to the home. Arrive before any other guests. My friend says "Tony, we got a problem" He said "see the couple walking on the beach"? "They are not sure they want to get married". By now people from all over are arriving from everywhere. Many have paid a fortune in plane fairs. Bottom line-no wedding. But all agreed to have the same party. And quite a party it was. Band on the sand, food you couldn't believe. Likely far more fun than what would have been a normal wedding reception. My lasting memory was I got to meet and have a long conversation with Buzz Aldrin. Did we discuss space? Nope. Our entire hour an half we talked about alcoholism.
Eventually the couple did marry but it was several months later in a private ceremony in Santa Barbara. Unfortunately it was only a few years later my friend's son died in a plane crash off the So Cal coast. His wife moved, with their kids to Costa Rica where she connected with the Calif. surfing community. Now she is involved in off road racing as a driver for her father in law's company.
But it was quite a party ! Wedding or not.
