The show does start a little slow but it did grab hold of me after a few episodes and I couldn't get away from the grasp.
The child abuse is a main part of Bosch's character. He was abused badly by his father and that is part of him and always will be. It also explains why some of his faults are what they are. He has lost a lot in his life but manages to "carry on".
