At least loading this way..

which is photos by year, you DO get year by year backed up, whereas with trying to backup the entire library, if there's one issues, the entire thing goes kaput..

Started with photos at 2000.. have now loaded through 2012 with no issues, but that was to be expected since I've had backups successfully made through 2016.. each year the folder grows in number o photos and file size - higher res cameras etc.. I fully expect it to crater around 2019..
