Founded in the late 19th century it became a major hub for the Great Northern Railway and the lumber industry. In the 1960s when the railway moved and the lumber mill closed the town almost dried up. So they came up with the idea of modeling the town after a Bavarian village and turning the place into one big tourist trap. Now it sees something like a million tourists a year.
