it does look somewhat like a mic BUT.... if it is, (and it may be), isn't it mounted UNDER the rim of the tom, not over the head? If so... I have never seen that before BUT... he is playing behind a shield so muting is intentional.... mounting the mic under the rim would definitely be muted compared to over the head.
