My guess is that mic was a direct line to the monitor mixer.. generally there is another entire mixing board off stage on stage left.. could get bon stage right, too, but usually left from my experiences.. there is a guy running that board and his entire function is to mix the monitor mixes onstage.. more and more people are using ear buds for monitors, but I prefer monitors cranked.. each monitor, for each guy onstage has a different mix, determined by whoever monitor it is..
For example, in MY monitors I only want two things: guitar cranked full blast and snare drum cranked full blast.. ibwant the guitar screaming because the volume onslaught makes me feel invinceable, which gives me the proper attitude onstage for what I do.. but I can't hear anything but guitar, so I need the snare drum cranked so I can keep in time withe the drummer..
Nobody else wants their monitors like that.. bass player probably wants kick drum and snare, maybe lots vocals.. drummers (feel free to chime in Jimmy) if they are setup typically, are about even with the guitar amps, so they can't hear guitar on a large stage, so they need lots of guitar in their monitors.. maybe not in a smaller venue, but definitely in a larger one.. everyone has different want and needs onstage..
My guess is he was talking to the monitor mixer asking for something specific.. I might be wrong, but that's my best guess..
