This one - - "Miracle", time is going to have to work overtime to erase. But...
You are right. Few today know the magnitude of that miracle... not all their fault, BTW. They don't know and have little place to learn those things you spelled out.
Even at the time few out here in Ca. were aware of what had occurred. Ice Hockey was not well known back then. I remember the night after the USA beat Russia, (Gold medal game was still to come) I attended our youth football leagues's winter meeting. At the end of the meeting, just before adjourning, I stood and said "How about a round of applause for our Olympic Hockey Team"..... few in the room had any idea what I was talking about... they had missed it. "MY GOD", I thought to myself.... to have missed that game?
But they soon learned! As you know they didn't show that game live... it was delayed. I had blocked ALL media that day so I wouldn't hear the result.... so I watched it 'delayed' but had no idea who had won the game. And then.... I HAVE to repeat this... probably 20th time I've told this on this board - -
I was an avid runner when that game took place. When I ran for time I was clocking around 5:15 for the mile. Between the 2nd and 3rd period, as soon as the 2nd period ended... I told myself, "If I can beat 5 minutes flat the USA will win the game"..... and I took off. I don't remember my exact time, but it was under 5 minutes.... I think 4:58? it was close. Then I settled in for that miracle 3rd period, and the greatest call in the history of sport by Al Michaels and Ken Dryden.
The movie is a staple in my family. All of us. We watch it at least once a year, as a family. I watch it.... 3 or 4 times per year. - JamesJM
