But there are also stretches of desolation. Northwestern Ontario from the Manitoba border to Lake Superior is heavy boreal forest and not much else for hundreds upon hundreds of kilometres. There are sections of two lane highway where there isn’t a straight stretch to be found for hours and when you combine that with the steady stream of 18-wheelers it can be a harrowing experience in a vehicle. I have learned to love driving across the prairies, but there certainly isn’t a lot of variety there. The Rockies of course, are spectacular. The views along the shores of Lake Superior from Thunder Bay to Sault Ste Marie are breathtaking as well. Lots of hills and corners to be found on that stretch of road, with several provincial parks with beaches to stop at as well.
I’ve always wanted to visit Arizona, Utah and Colorado. Those views would be second to none. So far I’ve only had a brief layover in the Denver airport though. We had a trip booked for Arizona in March of 2000 that we canceled due to covid.
