There's no doubt that..

had the mechanical shark worked more often, the movie wouldn't have been nearly as good.. Because it never worked, they had to find ways to depict it being there: dragging the barrels, the music, underwater shots looking at victims etc.. Also why you don't see the hsark until almost an hour in the movie..
