Its safer on the Caribbean side..

on the coast, but its getting a little more "interesting" every year.. The condo we stay in has had the first floor condo broken into several times - one while we were there.. that's why wee always stay on the second floor.. harder to break into and more visible.. Just a matter of time, tho.. We lock ourselves in the bedroom at night but hafta open the door to go to the bathroom which is next to the bedroom.. every time I open that door at 3am I expect someone to be in the condo.. I had stuff in the condo in places I don't think anyone would look.. Only time will tell if our efforts pay off, but we've stayed there for about 20 years and no problems yet...

I wouldn't go to any of the Texas border towns, tho, or anywhere else in Mexico other than the Caribbean coast.. Yes, the Police are corrupt and its a constant battle of cat and mouse to not get fleeced by them looking for lunch money.. So far we've been unscathed on the mainland although we DID get fleeced in Cozumel 25 years ago...
