As long as we play soft coverage / bend / don't break, I say just get some Average Joe or keep what we have. Then I'd go Top Of The Class across the board on O line. Because the current system puts a helluva lot of pressure on the O to score and not only be leading late in the 4th but by MORE than one TD and 2 point Conversion. Our scheme on D has even tied AD's hands. Hell, we could have another Fearsome Foursome but it doesn't mean Jack if QBs are getting rid of the ball in hardly two seconds to Receivers that have LOTS of room to run underneath and then met by a Secondary that cannot or will not (Observers) tackle worth a crap.
The main one being that we already saw that adding a premium pass rusher works in this system. We played the same system last year and Donald and Miller wreaked havoc.
Also, the current system does not put a lot of pressure on the offense to score. In fact if put offense would've been even average then we would've won at least 3 more games already. Our RedZone defense was top 5 last I checked. So forcing your opponent to lock field goals is not handicapping the offense.
One thing that's happening, as jourdan Rodrigue explained, is that the Rams are having to blitz to get pressure which means a linebacker/safety/slot corner is leaving a void in the defense to try and get to the QB. You fix that with a front four that doesn't need blitzing to win. If you can get pressure with four, you can have 7 in coverage.
Your last part is the key though. We need corners who diagnose quicker.
Yes, I agree the D scheme works better with a great pass rush but let's be honest, if you can rush the passer with only "4" guys the scheme you are running has a better chance of success
regardless what that scheme is.
The issue is that it's not that easy to to do even with an "all world" AD as one of those 4. We have been looking for someone to "step up" next to AD but we haven't found anyone who can do it consistently for a few years now.
Having said that, playing 8-10 yards off all the time and back peddling at the snap makes things too easy (at least between the 20's) on the offense to do whatever they want as long as they do it in less than 2 seconds which is exactly what we have been seeing.
I agree with Gator. I don't care who you get as a pass rusher, if he has to get there in less than 2 seconds it's almost impossible to do. Even the BEST pass rushers would have trouble getting there that fast.
I agree the scheme is a top 5 in the red zone but that is because the field is so much shorter making things easier to defend. You no longer have to worry about getting beat deep making it easier to play the "route\WR". I guess the bottom line is "stopping" them from scoring or holding them to a FG so there is that.
I still say we need to mix it up more between the 20's to help our pass rush get there. We need to make QB's hold that ball for just a second or two longer and a few well designed "disguises" should do that. Player so soft does just the opposite.
#HelmetHornsMatter
“Well, the color is good, I like the metallic blue,” Youngblood recently said while laughing, via NFL Journal. “The horn is terrible. It looks like a ‘C.’ When I first saw it on the logo I honestly thought it was a Charger logo.
“Now when I see it on the helmet, it just isn’t a ram horn. There is no distinct curl like a mature ram horn. I don’t know how the Rams could get that wrong. That is your symbol and it has been for what? Seventy years or more? Longer than I have been alive? It’s just not us, it’s not the Rams.”---Mr. Ram Jack Youngblood
