No matter what rationalizations are made the basic truth is we need better coordination of this defense. The secondary is not deceptive enough pre-snap, guys are not playing with anticipation in zone, they're not well prepared in man either for route combinations of opponents, and we're not going to find a top edge to bail us out again back there. They need to fix the secondary which means a DC with a strong grasp of what is required.

Staley would meet that objective. He will be available this offseason I think. Fangio obviously would as well. Both are well steeped in the chosen scheme McVay prefers.

It sucks for McVay but to date he has always made that hard call when it had to be made. So I have faith he'll do what must be done.

Dude, have you even watched the Chargers the last couple years? Their defense has been gashed far worse than the Rams. I'm sorry because I'm normally not so combative but ignorance drives me insane

Could Staley be doing "too much" being the HC? I don't follow the Chargers and don't know how "hands on" Staley is with his D. Maybe he's given full power to his DC?

Maybe Staley is a better Coordinator than HC just Morris was?

Exactly right.

Staley was prepared and performed at an exemplary level as a DC. But he has been in over his head as the main voice with the Chargers. Which, let's be honest, was always going to be a struggle. The front office matters. The owner matters. So his defense not looking like the unit he coached up with the Rams is explained to some extent by the fact he has not been able to focus in on it with the greater responsibilities of head coach for a poor owner and front office. This happens to plenty of great coordinators when they make that jump to HC.

Basically the way I look at it is Spanos grabbed Staley too early. The guy was a year removed from being a college DC. His schematic adjustments were brilliantly coached and executed, but jumping on him like he was going to elevate Spanos' crappy organization was poor ownership. Spanos needs a proven head coach like Sean Payton to turn his fortunes around. Playing the hot coordinator wheel isn't going to get it done.

Staley is a really nice DC for McVay because he specializes in a scheme that McVay hates to go against. And he's very thorough when paired with McVay and Snead in letting them know what he needs. Which is also part of the problem with this defense, the parts they have on the back end.
