I like the guy. I like his fire. He showed he can adjust and is good enough to win a Super Bowl with.
What I didn't like was what seemed like a more "passive D" ( or as you said "a lot of quarters coverage and off positions"
early in the season that seemed to be a little more "aggressive" later in the season and into the playoffs.
Did we run less "quarters and off positions" later in the year 53?
What changed in the playoffs, when Weddle came, was the safeties moved around and confused QBs,
Usually Rams played left- and right safeties. With Weddle he change sides, sometimes play on strong side
and sometimes weak side, sometimes he was to the field and sometimes to the boundary.
Rams disguised thing more...the coverages were basically the same. Now, what call was made against
what formation? Details like that are impossible to figure out but if people (not talking about you) think Rams played
some aggressive man coverage in they are simply wrong.
In the Super Bowl Rams played what is called "Zeus 1" the "1" means the Bengals receiver Chase. They
usually played Cover-2 zone his side, he was the "X" receiver, usually far outside on the weak side.
Rams would "Cloud" that side--that is a term we heard Stafford use this week when asked why he didn't throw to Robinson
he said they were "clouding it". So we did the same thing to Chase that the Bills did to Robinson. It's a soft zone
it's Cover-2 to that side...creates double coverage if he goes deep.
On the 3 receiver side the Rams played quarters . . . again, another soft zone.
What Rams did was disguise things...they would have the cloud side bluff that he was in press--at the LOS, but still
play zone--he'd usually play short zone (squat) and then trail of the X went deep. If he went across he'd stay
and "squat"
But Rams ram Zeus all year at times. If it were against DK Metcalf it would be "Zeus 14" and it would be cover-2
to his side, cover-4 on the other side---it's called Cover-6. So in Super Bowl, plenty of times they were playing
cover-6 but varied the presnap look.
That's what I saw.
What I also saw was a great pass rush and great individual plays...Jones made 2-3 great plays. Miller was hot
Donald was his usual great. Robinson played better in that game than he did all year. Gaines hustled.
The pass rush wasn't more "aggressive" they just were playing great.
I know that is more than you wanted to know but it was mostly for others. If they want to learn.
If not, let them hate without understanding the facts (again, not talking about you)
