I am not a fan of "off coverage" regardless of what the stats say
I've explained it and the reasoning and the scheme, but it is not my favorite
either...I am not really a fan of the front, either, and the difficult
gap-and-a-half the 5 guys (of the 5-1) have to play.
I prefer one-gap, where Donald can just jet into the backfield--he still
does it once in a while--when he freelances, but aside from
him they just don't penetrate.
I never liked the two-gap scheme the Rams ran under Shurmur, either
this gap-and-half is kind of a cross between the two...but still
I would like a one-gap penetrating front four, not just on passing downs
but as a base, and a varied set of coverages that included
a press look. It would be easier on the eyes.
No one likes 8-yard cushions...fans at least. And there are times the
Fangio scheme calls for it..but I agree with people that bend but don't
break is frustrating.
But if you want more man coverage, you'd need pass rushers at every position
Not just Donald.
Would need defensive ends that can rush. We don't have them, we use smaller
linebackers on the edges---
Actually, scheme-wise the Fisher/Gregg Williams was the most diverse complete
scheme and we had the horses.
With them, tough, they got too aggressive with blitzes and left CBs on an island
playing man that if the pressure didn't get there that CB was toast.
If you want aggressive defense from the charging front 4, to some blitzing,
and more man to man--that's is...but look where it got us.
