I've always wondered about giving the starter all the snaps. Shouldn't your main backup get a whole bunch too so that he can come in confidently if/when an injury occurs? And I've also never understood the NFL's long standing 53 man squad and being allowed to dress fewer than that. If you take away the kicker, punter and long snapper you're talking about 50 jobs. 11 starters on offense. 11 starters on defense. Now, if all 22 have a backup you're at 44. So, you really only have 6 more jobs left to play with. Let's call one a PR/KR specialist like Powell. Now, you have 5. You can only go 3 deep at 5 open spots for 22 positions. Do you need a third RB? Of course you do. 4. How about a third TE? Almost every team says yes. 3. How about a 5th WR? You're starting two or three out if you're allowed 4. Yes you say.
2. How about another DB? You do have eight for the four or five positions. (2 CBS, 2 safeties, a nickel) well, I need another nickel in case of injury. 1. Okay so we are down to one open spot. Would that be your 3rd QB? Last year the Rams kept 3.
Most years they don't. They keep that spot for another rusher or a ST's demon. Maybe they want to keep another DB. How about a 4th TE?
Kind of ridiculous. They sort of make up for it with the practice squad. But, that should be only for rookies or other inexperienced players to stash for the future. I think the whole thing is cray-cray.
