Rams kicking the can down the road: So what it's the Window

July 01, 2022 04:34AM
Just how often do you have a chance to go all the way? When you have that chance do you go all in or do you play it conservative and lower your odds of success?

You hear Les Snead talk about a window and the trade for Stafford was all about the window, same thing with the Miller trade. Looking at the roster the window is still open and providing things don't fall apart with injuries I expect a similar approach, going all in to win next year. If we peak ahead to 2023 it seems we may also have an opportunity for the window to still be open as our stars are signed. Does that window extend to 2024? I think by then the odds will be less and require that we strike gold in the later rounds to surround the stars but you can project more cap casualties and holes that will need to be filled.

Anyway I think our window counting last year is 3 years and possibly 4. After that I think we will be forced to change tactics and start thinking about the best way to rebuild or reload. By 2025 Donald & Wagner will probably be gone, Kupp will be old for a WR, and Stafford will be old for a QB. We can expect that even Ramsey will have lost a few steps by then. We can anticipate that some star will be gone and others will be in decline. We also will be faced with dead money on the cap that is significant from the Donald and Wagner contracts so it's doubtful we can just sign more star FA. The kicking the can down the road bill will need to be paid and will come due in 2025.

On the bright side we should have ample draft capital and the cap hell will only last about 2 seasons. In fact our draft capital should start to improve following next years draft. So the reload/rebuild process may not take that long especially with the Snead/McVay guiding that process.

So did we go all in last year? You bet we did. Will we do it again this year? Providing we are in contention and need a final piece to win it all you bet we will. And like last year we will want the other team to eat the cap space and will have to overpay in draft capital. Same thing in 2023 you gotta go for it when the window is open.

Ozzie seems to miss the concept of how all the pieces fit together and when its the right time to push you chips onto the table and make the bet. Can we win another Superbowl in the next 2 or 3 years? I think that takes a lot of luck and a lot of thing must go right that you have no control over. But we have decent odds, better than almost any other team so you do everything you can that is in your control to improve those odds and win another Super Bowl. That is the Rams approach and Ozzie could learn a few things from it.
