I haven't seen AD mention holding out. He has talked about retiring as an option, but I don't recall anything about a hold out.

I’m too lazy to research it but AD has held out in the past (2018, I believe) so there is a precedent.

As to hold out vs threat of retirement? A distinction without much of a difference for the Rams, don’t you think?
