No hate here, RamBRO. I love AD as a player and teammate.
It’s just business. Stafford was in the last year of his contract. Negotiating a new contract was entirely appropriate. Prudent, even.
Contracts exist for a reason. They are meant to protect both parties.
Let’s look at this AD contract in a different way.
The cap and the salaries within is a zero sum proposition, meaning that the more AD (or any other player) gets now leaves that much less for other players. Yes, certain contract structures enable kicking the can down the road in exchange for cap room now, but it’s like credit card debt and sooner or later there will be financial pain.
So, every million extra dollars that AD extracts from Rams now reduces their ability to sign the likes of an OBJ or a Quinn, etc. Is this in the long term best interests of a team in hot pursuit of another SB win?
Also, is it wise for Rams to set the precedent for tearing up a 6 year contract after 3 years because the player insists on being highest paid at his position at all times? What if Ramsey and his agent get a similar notion? Or Kupp? Or Allen Robinson? Or Stafford? Where does such a slippery slope stop?
I would have more respect for AD and his agent if they would simply honor that existing contract and wait until ‘24 to negotiate an extension.
