One of the things that has always plagued Ramsey is that he gets bored because playing only outside the other team just won't throw his way much. The "star" is one way to keep him involved and not bored. And remember what a physical guy he is. He's like another Strong Safety out there.
In today's NFL there has to be a lot more attention paid to the slot, who anymore can be some pretty large dudes. No more smurf nicklebacks. Ramsey as the star is often in position to cut off the quick short throw thus giving our pass rush time to bother the QB.
When you win a Superbowl using this concept, it is pretty hard to argue... until a different set of circumstances call for change.
I am with Rock on this one, when Ramsey first came to the Rams he eliminated the opposing teams top receiver, the league adjusted and then used that against the Rams sticking Ramsey away from the action the entire game or scheming their top guy so that Ramsey couldn't lock him down as well (either like the Packers or Niners did). The Rams adjustment to that was the star to keep opposing offenses guessing an unable to eliminate Ramsey. Was it perfect? No but the way the Rams deployed Ramsey initially was no longer going to work, like the zone blitz worked well for two years but once teams figured out how to beat it, defenses couldn't use it as their primary defense anymore. The Fangio/Staley defense is the rage now and the only reason it hasn't been "figured out" yet is because one of it's foundations is the vanity of OC geniuses and top flight QB's. There is a book on how to beat it, it is just that prescription requires coaches and qb's to play in a way that is less pleasing to their egos. You can't stay stagnant because the league will figure you out. McVay's offense 1.0 was unstoppable at first but then the great defenses minds found a cure for it which necessitated a change.
