Since you are more adept at deciphering what the Defense is doing. I want to ask you this about Morris: Does he disguise his coverage and rotate them after the snap as much as Staley did? It seems to me that we are basically just showing our cards at the snap and hope for the best. I really am curious as to your answer.
BTW I think this Staley/Fangio defense sucks because there is one giant flaw in it that ruins it. You can keep the ball by running it and getting the ball out quickly which is the antithesis of what we need our D to be. If they are going to score a touchdown and take 15 plays to do it vs doing it in 3 because you gave up a big play..give me the big play TD and get our offense back out there..this defense just hurts our offense because time of possession is non existent. We wonder why the offense is going 3 and out...well coming off the bench when you have been sitting for 10-15min is not conducive to getting in a groove. Having McVay running a no huddle after having our D out there for a long time boggles the mind as well.
Yes, presnap it's a cover 2/4 shell. Then they rotate into the coverage. Most often it's mach quarters, but they also rotate one safety down and play Cover-6 with that one safety playing the run if it's a run of playing the backside hole (middle zone) as a robber to take away in-cutting routes if it is a pass.
So yes, when you watch almost all the time, pre-snap is looks like Cover-2, then they rotate.
Okay, now the theory is not to give up 15 plays. The theory is not to give up a big play, but that after 5-6-7 plays you will stop them. WHy isn't it working this year as opposed to last year?
Breaks to the ball.
DBs were better at it last year than this year.
Troy Hill was a starter and he was better than we all thought. He played outside in base and nickel (star) in nickel, when Ramsey was there.
He'd read the route, when it showed he break to the ball and break up the pass.
When he was in in nickel (inside) Williams was outside. He was great last year. He's regressed.
Williams is now the starter, not as good as Hill was. And when Ramsey is ouside WIlliams is often in the slot and Long was and now Rochelle is outside
And when Ramsey and WIlliams are outside DD as in the slot.
Last year Fuller was RS and was excellent Johnson was the LS and he was great
Fuller is now the LS and he's okay, but not GREAT. Rapp is the RS and he is not EXCELLENT, he's stuggling (Iwaswrong about him, I thought he was going
to be a player)
The philosophy of the defense is to read the route, take that guy and BREAK on the ball. Last years' guys did it better than this year's guys
Hill > Williams
Williams > Long, Rochelle, etc
Fuller > Rapp
Johnson > Fuller
Young >Reeder
Hill in slot > DD and Williams (when Ramsey not there)
and so on
Brockers > A-Rob, Brockers played in 4 man lines had 5 sacks, decent pressure as compliment
Fox? nor replacement---had 6 sacks last year and decent pressure
TALENT LEVEL is DOWN
