Well thought out and nuanced. I agree with pretty much all of it. It could be easily argued that personnel wise the defense isn't as good this year as it was last year...yet. So less experienced and talented players aren't playing up to last year's standard. Who is to say the current approach is being used to hide weaknesses? Like how coaches often go zone to hide weaknesses at cb, maybe the current approach is trying, maybe not well, to hide a weakness on this defense.
how badly we are getting beaten---I am talking coverage, now, not run stopping.
Long didn't get beat that badly, not saying he SUCKS, but who he replaced was Hill and Hill was good enough, apparently, to get good money-
So, for sake of argument Hill was a "7" and Long is a "6" or "5" that is a drop off
Let's say Ramsey was a 10 last year and a 10 now
Maybe Johnson, who got a big contract, was maybe an "8"--maybe FUller, who is playing
that left side--is good, but only a "7"
Maybe last year Fuller, on the right, was that "7" and Rapp is a "6" or "5"
Maybe Kiser was a 5 and Young is a 5 or 6
Maybe Fox was a 6 and whoever is taking his reps, the new guys are 4s
Hollins, maybe he's a 6 and Lewis is still a 5
Floyd--call him an 8 and maybe is still an 8
Donald 10 and 10
Brockers, maybe a 7 or 6, Robinson maybe a 5 or 6
Maybe all of those numbers are off, but I
have not seen anyone "step up"
maybe Joseph-Day who did look good until yesterday.
I just think in game in inches---small differences in talent matter
and maybe by week 5-6-7-8 or whatever some of thise guys do step up
and start playing as good or better than who is gone.
