The challenge with accepting John Wolford as the Rams' backup quarterback is how much differently he plays the position than the starting quarterback Matthew Stafford.
Stafford is a surgeon with the offense, and will be expected to pick apart defenses with his arm. He will do so by passing from sideline to sideline, from short to intermediate to deep routes. Unfortunately, that is nothing like Wolford's skillset.
Wolford will use his legs to extend plays, but hasn't shown the ability to complete deep passes. That worked well for Jared Goff, who struggled when facing pressure, and who seldom read his progressions beyond the second option. Wolford's version of 2020's offense was compatible because the Rams didn't test the back end of defenses.
This year, the Rams will do so. That will be a tough matter to resolve if Wolford is suddenly put into a game.
This is John Wolford's last year of his contract. I'm not sure that the Rams bring him back for 2022 unless he's developed the ability to heave and complete the long ball. That is just my humble opinion.
