Maybe I'm masochistic idk. But I don't have a problem with the starters sitting. I get it. Now it sort of annoys me to see key backups sit, but if they're important then it sort of makes sense I guess.
Either way I do enjoy watching depth players duke it out. You can watch camp and drills all you want but some guys are gamers. And games are full speed. You can't tell these kids in practice "ok guys we're gonna thud but we need to do this at game speed" and then actually get game speed. It doesn't work that way. Scrimmages and practice are great and useful but tune-up games do have value and largely due to McVay it's now about the depth chart.
The real problem here with preseason games is the NFL being greedy IMO. They should accept what they are, which is a series of games for depth chart sorting. Once they get there, opening the games to first-come first-served makes sense. Pack the fans in. Use that experience to tune up your stadium crew too for the season. Get some money coming in with the concession sales. Put the games up on NFL.com without need of logging in or paying for them. Etc.
