The Dodgers and Lakers DID have several down years. It didn't matter. The LA Times (and even the Herald when it still existed) ran plenty of stories on them.
The Rams had many good years in LA. It didn't matter. The local media still didn't do much coverage or use the top notch people to cover it.
Fan interest on the return of the Rams to LA is high (according to the reports). Training camp bleachers overflowing; tons of fans at the new stadium for a look-see. But you wouldn't guess it from the media or from 3rd rate sports journalists like Thiery who seems to know little more about football than for big sweaty guys jumping on top of each other.
My point is that since when did attendance at the games (for any of the teams) matter for LA media coverage? I was at the Forum and Chavez Ravine many times when the stadiums had lots of unoccupied seats. The two have no bearing on one another for LA sports media. They have their own agenda and it seems anything NFL isn't very high on it.
I understand your point (about fan attendance and perception) and won't argue it.
But that wasn't the point I was making.
The point I was focusing on was that both the Lakers and Dodgers had won championships. And here in LA, that's what's worth attracting our attention to the point that we demand more news coverage for a team.
This is why I brought up the example of the Raiders. They won a championship...here in LA. People here haven't forgotten about that. And, if Mark Davis could've made that move back here, they'd be more popular than the Rams right now because of it (and a couple of other factors). I mean...remember, once the NFL shot down the joint Charger/Raider venture in Torrance, they gave the Raiders the 2nd right of refusal to move into the Inglewood project with the Rams - behind the Chargers. Even though I'm sure Kronke didn't want either of them occupying SoFi with the Rams, there was NO WAY he was going to reject the Chargers (despite their ineptitude) and have the Raiders compete with him in LA. He wanted the Raiders as far away as possible.
That's not a media thing, though. It's area culture and business.
