It's been over 30 years since I lived in SoCal. But during my many years of living there, the Rams were always second fiddle. I really don't know why; it's almost a media culture out there that has little use for NFL football.
The media absolutely can shape attitudes and interest. So their lack of interest made it tougher for the Rams to be a draw. I think it's not totally fair to blame the Rams for not winning the Super Bowl as the reason for the lack of interest. Most years, they were a very good team with a high winning percentage.
I'm sorry, but that's simply not good enough for SoCal and (having lived here) you should know that. Unless we just so happen to be playing the Vikings in a playoff game, it's typically a sunny 80 degrees on a December day here in LA, the OC, and Ventura. And if you're not the "IT" thing, you're just
one of many things that could potentially occupy most people's time (whether that be at the beach or up in Big Bear). Media or not, that's ALWAYS been the appeal of living here. And that's not just in LA. I have the NFL Sunday Ticket and I check out Dolphin home games. Despite being on the upswing with a young HC and a very good defense, Hard Rock Stadium isn't exactly bursting at the seems with fans. And something tells me South Beach has a lot to do with that. Being the guy that drove from the valley to Anaheim to watch some absolutely God-awful football in the early 90's, I'm clearly an outlier (and a glutton for extreme, inhumane punishment).
Because the Dodgers and Lakers have shown the ability to win championships (multiple recently for the Lakers), they've compelled our attention and belief that, no matter how bad they might actually be, THIS COULD BE THE YEAR THEY WIN IT AGAIN. As a result, we get 24/7 coverage of off-season Laker free agent signings of has-beens.
And I don't believe that it's an NFL thing either. The reason I say this is because I believe that, if Mark Davis had any real money, he would've moved the Raiders back to Los Angeles. And had he done that, the Raiders (because they actually won a championship here in LA) would have, at the very least, been on equal footing with the Dodgers. Do you disagree?
I think this is all moot, though.
Outside of the uniform debacle, this organization under Stan Kronke has made all the right moves lately: from moving the team (obviously)...to drafting Jared Goff...to trading Jared Goff...to hiring McVay...to re-signing Aaron Donald and acquiring Jalen Ramsey...and trading for Stafford.
I share what I believe to be your expectations of, at least, one Rams championship over the next two seasons. And along with that will come more fans DEMANDING more coverage of the team.
