There are, currently, only two AM sports radio channels operating in LA. One of them is the flagship station for the Dodgers while the other...the Lakers. They both discuss to two respective team heavily and will devote block after block after block of programming to them. This has primarily been the situation since 2012.
However, in 2014, a prior all-news channel KFWB (980) switched formats and went all sports. They covered all the local teams and was the flagship station for the Clippers. Suffice to say, that wasn't a compelling reason to tune in. The station's headline host was Fred Roggin who's been covering LA sports for decades. It's widely believed that he had some inside info on the Rams moving to Inglewood and pumped it (and Rams football) as much as possible in 2015.
When the news finally broke confirming the move in January 2016, many long-time Rams fans began to check out KFWB. Because the other two stations were already committed to Laker/Dodger talk, Roggin and other talk show hosts on the station exploited the vacuum and talked Ram football all.the.time.
I was one who tuned in and just
KNEW that the station would make a play to become the new flagship station of the team once the move was made. We were going to go back to the old AM-710 format with Joe "Big Nasty" McDonald talking Rams football (except that it'd be Roggin instead of the deceased McDonald).
Turns out that my dream was pipe.
What I (and likely the station hosts) didn't know was that, a week or two before the Rams move back to LA was approved by the league, the station had been sold. By March, the station had discontinued its all-sports format in favor of - wait for it...South Asian Bollywood music.
Rams make the move to Cali...signs on with KSPN...and takes up the 3rd slot behind Laker basketball and Laker off-season basketball.
Really thought that the organization could have tossed a lifeline to KFWB's sports shows. It would've been helpful for the team to have its own dedicated station.
