Why does a lineman have to be a leader to be a good OL? Not to say that leadership is a negative ...
It;s character. They don't have to be team leaders in the NFL and linemen generally aren't. The qualities the 3 I listed showed in college were special, which makes it credible to think that they are special players. Character--a mindset and mental orientation that favors them becoming pros. So again all I meant by college leadership is that they showed enormous character that was recognized by other players and coaches on their college teams. Brad Holmes said that a college coach told him that when he arrived, Anchrum was 18 going on 28. Brewer played for a year while undergoing chemo and didn't tell anyone until after. Corbett was a walk-on who became the team's starting LOT that year and then a repeat team captain starting in his sophomore year because the team respected the way he played his freshman year injured.
A lot of college linemen play because they're big and athletic and it's a ticket--beyond that they don't have the drive or mentality to be a solid pro. I would say that in different ways, Barron, Jason Smith, and Robinson were all like that--they were all lacking in that way.
All you ever hear about Jackson is his physical traits.
