I may have missed it but I didn't see anyone in that article say that he was going to be "great" or "elite" either. Aikman said that he expects him to have his best season and that it wouldn't surprise him if Stafford was in the MVP conversation but that was it, wasn't it?
So, being in the conversation or not surprised if someone is the MVP doesn't make someone elite or great, then I guess nothing does count as being great.
LOL
Well, I don't really know for you. I would consider it elite if he won the MVP but that isn't Aikman predicting it will happen or even be likely. You keep acting as if "everyone" is claiming he's great and elite but that isn't what was said in the article. So, you exaggerated that point and exaggerated the injury point. Which paints a picture that you perhaps you don't want.
It "seems" like you're on the anti-Stafford train when you exaggerate like that. I know you aren't though but it makes it confusing when you seem to be chastising people for being excited and predicting Stafford's game to improve under McVay and with the Rams. If Stafford has been putting up top 10 years with the Lions, it's only reasonable to assume there's going to be a jump with a better team. So, if he goes up from the top 10, he's going to be in that elite conversation.
But none of those in the interview said that he has been great or elite. They were very complimentary of various aspects of his game and intangibles but none said he has been great for the Lions and none actually, literally said it's a certainty next year. I don't understand why you're pushing back on the story?
Very good post. It's reasonable to expect improvement when he will have a top running game, a plethora of weapons, and one of the best offensive minds calling the plays.
To add a finer point on the elite issue, those who have used that term have done it in reference to his skillset. I don't know anyone who has said he's been an elite performer with the Lions.
