Feel free not to believe that. But just know that others DO believe it. .
No I take it one step further. Starting in 2007 in the Bulger debates, till now, no one has ever proven the argument that there are qbs who transcend deficient OLs or elevate them or any of that. I mentioned two and they couldn't always pull it off. If your OL degrades, your offense degrades. All this time, like I said going back to 2007, I have asked people to provide examples of qbs who did that. No example has ever stood up. (In the end I added Brady and Wilson to the list myself).
Just the other day I was listening to a commentator who compared Prescott in Dallas and Stafford in Detroit. Prescott was handed advantages with that OL they had, while often, Stafford had to contend with weaker OLs (though last year's was pretty solid). The commentator said, imagine what Stafford could have done if he ended up with that Dallas OL.
Good qb play depends on a lot of things, including the qb himself, but also including a synergy with his OL, and along with that, strong playcalling and good offensive design. A mediocre coach can set that back, a mediocre qb can obviously set that back, and so can a problem OL. I have seen it over and over. '
You can call it just another opinion, that's fine. But I am pretty hardened and battle-tested from debating this for years now. I've changed my mind about a lot of things having to do with the NFL over the years, so if I ever saw an argument about this issue that gave me pause, I would have paused.
We do agree on some things when it comes to Stafford, we just put it differently. You're into the whole "processing speed" and "reading defenses" thing, and I just see all that in his case as effects of experience. That's why I keep mentioning that he's a good savvy vet who has "seen it all." LA will set him up well to take advantage of all that. But back in his 4th and 5th years, that was not the case yet--he had as many poor games as virtually any other 4th or 5th year qb you can name (with Stafford, both years combined, 2012 and 2013, it's actually 4 games
per season with qb ratings below 70 and a total of 7 TDs and 18 INTs combined in those 8 games). So he got where he is now the hard way.
