In regard to 2019, are you saying that the horrible OL was the only issue? Did Goff have any regression apart from the OL?
IMO? It's impossible to separate the 2. For example go back to Bulger in 2007. Was he less effective or did having a demolished OL make him less effective? If a demolished OL makes him less effective then by definition he's not playing as well--but is that "regression"?
I get where you're coming from. But I feel that may only apply to fans.
I think that somehow the coaching staff has ways to evaluate what's the OL and what's the QB. With enough film study, you should be able to evaluate any position apart from other interrelated positions.
Also, it was largely acknowledged last year, and I believe you even acknowledged that the OL was much better in the 2nd half of 2019. The improvement was striking enough that IMO it's not accurate to say that the 2nd half OL was demolished.
I wasn't talking about the coaching staff. My remarks about not being aware of what 2019 meant was aimed at some sports writers.
I doubt the coaching staff thought Goff "regressed" in 2019.
...
Don't know if regressed is the word but according to Jourdan Rodrigue they feel he didn't evolve as expected over the past 2 seasons.
That sounds like Jourdan doesn't understand how to factor in OL issues in discussing qb play. I am starting to see that Jourdan is an access journalist who is not going to shake things up with insights the Rams will not want to hear.
In terms of the "coaches"--and I highly doubt that's genuinely plural--that just tells you that sometimes, a coach and a player do not match up, though the coach takes that as some complete judgment when it's actually just a series of preferences, assumptions, desires and so forth.
Someone who knows both Goff and McVay well (Shrager) just thinks McVay wants a different direction so cannot see that this qb can rebound and play well. He doesn't want to pound Goff into his square hole and has no interest in changing the geometry of the hole.
Whether we prefer the Jourdan version or the Shrager version will almost invariably depend what we want to believe based on what we thought before. It's too soon in the history to get any further than that. Lots has to happen before we get much of a clear picture. What will happen in the meanwhile is that people will promote one view, denigrate or dismiss the other, and be content to sit on their opinion...until lots happens and we get a much clearer picture. That will take a while.
