and that seems to be par for the course for the Rams at the moment.
I think it comes down to this: Rams feel they have a window and are all in on the bet that they can get back to the Super Bowl.
Lord knows Goff was a good QB and its been a long, long time since the Rams had a good QB. So I am wary of losing the bird in the hand. Stafford is more than the two birds in the bush. The Rams got him and he has a lot of film where he excelled in areas that Goff didn't. Right or wrong, McVay has made the decision to try to get better at the QB position. I nervously applaud that. If McVay didn't think Goff was the guy then he has to move on.
I am very excited for the season. But then if I had rolled the dice like that what choice do I have but to be excited about the possibilities?
I still contend that there were things behind the scenes that we will probably never know. McVay may or may not have handled this poorly. But it's uncharacteristic of him to be a jerk. I think there would be more smoke around that if he really lacked integrity.
Finally, as far as Goff goes. I do think he underperformed. I think a lot of it was on him. Just my own opinion based on how I watch and interpret the game. But no doubt he is a good QB and in the right situation he has flourished. But it appears that it was too difficult to develop that kind of situation for him at this point. Enter Stafford who they feel doesn't require the same attention that Goff "did". The contract was a killer but I think they would have tried to move on anyway. Rams feel that Stafford affords them a better chance at a Super Bowl while the window is evidently open.
If Goff was the Rams QB, I would be hopeful but not excited about next season. Right now I can't wait for the season to start.
Anyway, I don't subtract for bold moves. And on the surface this was a good trade for the Rams. If it doesn't work out its a shame. But I don't think it will be a reflection on McVay's ability. My concern for him is burnout.
Just want to add that I love how you support the Rams. If all Rams fans were like you, Seattle's 12th man would look like an introverted mute. I also appreciate your passion for a subject with the ability to remain respectful in the debate. Cheers.
