The fact that neither the Rams nor Philly wound up with who they thought they would is pretty apparent. The comparison ends there.
The Rams decided to move on and upgrade, right freaking now.
Philly decided to bring in a controversy and keep playing the same game with a second round guy whose main attribute is his ability to run as is Wentz (sound familiar?).
No, of course Wentz and Goff aren't the same guy. The difference is that the Rams can now move on and Philly can't (or at least, hasn't yet and there is no hint that they will).
And besides that, what other upper caliber starting QB is going to be available? I guarantee you that Houston would prefer to take the risk of Watson sitting out the year than trading him away. And the haul they THINK they'd get won't happen. In fact, what they said they want is to keep other teams away from trying.
Rogers? That'll be the day.
So that leaves who exactly to upgrade your QB position? Jameis Winston? Haskins? CJ Beathard? Andy Dalton? Fitzgerald? Sam Darnold? Cam Newton?
The Rams worked some magic here, and I tell you right now that it is the McVay mystique that brought Stafford to LA. Just as it will a couple of critical FAs (on a team friendly deal) and some really good but ambitious assistants. It was a stroke of good luck that Holmes went to the Lions, that Stafford wanted to come, that he has 2 years left on what is now a darn reasonable contract, and that the Lions were willing to take on Goff and his horrendous contract.
As Eisen said, in time we'll see who was right: Philly or LA. But Philly has an aging team and the Rams the youngest. And the thing is, Snead is better with middle of the draft players than 1st rounders (not that he's used very many 1st rounders!). And BTW: those 2 first rounders the Lions will get are likely to be in the 25 -32 range. Not the top 10 variety.
So yes, I'm a fan of the trade and think that McVay and Snead did well. And no doubt Mr. Kroenke to allow it.
