Problem with drafting a QB is we're a contender. We have guys like Ramsey and Donald. The team cannot afford to put all its hope in a draftee when they want to win in 2021. So... I think they will 100% go get a vet. That doesn't mean we won't draft the position though. They may hedge their bet both ways but going into the draft you want the position filled with someone you can get behind.
Re: getting a vet the question is what level of vet. Well I think we can forget Rodgers. We can forget Watson. We can forget Stafford. Simply because those guys all require draft capital we cannot spare. We're up against it with contracts and need to bring in players who are affordable while helping us win.
This is why I think Darnold makes sense. Shouldn't be too pricey plus he's got upside. We'd be buying low which is what you want. Risky yes but he's also got some feel for the NFL level and if necessary McVay would be able to protect him in the scheme just like he did Goff. Minshew makes sense too but he doesn't have upside which let's face it is important to teams.
So IMO if they go after a guy like Minshew they will draft a QB too. Darnold maybe they just let him compete with all the read-option guys on the depth chart.
If we were drafting higher I would think maybe they just move up and get a guy they really like. But where we are the target for move-up would be Mac Jones. Who btw might be able to play pretty soon given a pro style offense familiarity and plenty of film getting through reads vs top competition. Thing is moving up for Jones would cost us and do you want to bank on him when you're a contender?
