Maybe he didn’t say it in so many words
But it’s just a baby step away.
McVay knew perfectly well what the press wanted to know and that was a light-year away from a ringing Goff vote of confidence.
And you absolutely do not do that in that situation. I mean--name ANYONE who has ever done that?
Goff held his own in the cold on the road against the #1 seed with a busted thumb, and that was (according to one source) while facing the most pressures any defense has put up against a McVay Rams offense.
If the coach can’t figure out how to settle his qb down, build around his strengths, and set him up to be more consistent and confident–then (IMO) the problem is not the qb.
If he can't figure out that the way NOT to do that is to set things up for an entire off-season of controversy, then yeah the problem is not the qb.
Goff had 4 bad games and he was far from being the only factor that made those 4 games bad. The other 13 games with Goff they went 10-3. You think Shanahan couldn't win with Goff? Heck Shanahan won with Garapolo and he's flat-out just not as good as Goff.
Where to start, zn?
1. Agreed that that was not coachspeak AND that it will doubtless rankle Goff. Maybe McVay doesn’t give a damn anymore?
2. McVay’s frustrations go far beyond just this game. This has apparently been building for over 2 years. In that context, this game and even this year are not the issue.
3. Agreed about McVay’s inability to ‘fix’ Goff for those 2 years. Raises questions about his teaching skills and ability to tailor his O to Goff’s strengths, doesn’t it? I mean, ‘fixing’ Goff would have been the quickest and easiest solution to this problem.
4. Let’s don’t cherry pick how many games Goff played ‘badly’. Let’s instead acknowledge that the Rams were 9-6 this season when Goff was 100% healthy. And benefitting from the play of the league’s #1 D, I might add. THAT’S the way an HC has to look at it.
I dunno...
I think that there’s some indirect evidence of a rift between McVay and Goff. We’ll see how serious it is in the coming months. Divorce or reconciliation? Stay tuned.
