Couple of things here.
1. I like Jake, he’s a great kid. And that’s the point, he’s a 22 year old kid. I give him a ton of credit for all the effort he puts in, but he’s far from a competent analyst. He’s memorized a ton of names and numbers but he’s not Matt Waldman. On top of that, Jake has a soft spot for talent limited players. He’s still beating the drum for Austin Davis, who he thought was gonna be the next Brett Favre.
2. Wolford is an overachiever, but the reality is he plays recklessly. He’s undersized and leads with his head, an injury just waiting to happen. He puts it all out there on the field, and it’s a double edged sword, what gives him a shot to play in the NFL with his limited physical ability also puts him in harms way. He is in no way a long term answer.
3. Goff may not be the long term answer either, my head tells me he’s not. I think he gets one more year to step up his game to be something like an Eli Manning level QB. But for now, we gotta live with him as our best option. Don’t have to like it, but that’s the lay of the land.
The first play he shows for example he misses two things of significance IMO. First that Higbee was the preferred read as a wide open option but Goff refuses to throw the ball for whatever reason and checks down to the underneath. Second that the read difficulty on a rollout is so easy a high school QB can and do execute that type of play with very high efficiency. So right out the gate you have an EASY read and yet Jared misses the opportunity. McVay is trying to make it easy on him.
And it just keeps going like that for most of the game tbh.
Look I hope Goff overcomes whatever is going on with him right now. But expecting him to find himself when he's in Lambeau in January is a bit of a stretch for me. And I am usually a homer for the most part. So I am hopeful but if you watch the tape of that game there is very little to see in the way of having something to make you feel confident about our QB.
