Throwing a few nice passes in PRACTICE knowing that you can’t be hit is one thing...
But consider this. There are at least 4 different levels of player intensity in an NFL season.
Summer camp. Extremely low grade even though some players are trying to catch coaches eye.
Preseason. A bit higher because jobs, including starter positions, are now on the line with limited snap opportunities.
Regular season. MUCH higher now that games really count for possible playoffs plus personal contract incentives must be earned. Things have finally gotten real.
Playoffs. Intensity has maxed out by all participants. I mean, the highest of the high is now on full display. It’s do or die for all with respect and reputation on the line on every single snap.

There are pros and cons for McVay to choose from on this decision. If his chosen QB wins, then McVay is a genius. If either QB loses, then McVay will be second guessed all offseason.
