I think Goff has had a down season. I think he's struggled with the stuff they put on him. He's had the protections and power to adjust the play all season long. It's a lot and he hasn't handled everything at the level they need. Now the question is can he get there? I think so but there is no way of knowing. Rams are going to need to build around him though before they try to make a change. They paid him so you gotta give him what he needs.
But what does he need around him?
Better OL first off. They need to be a top pass pro line with Goff in the backfield. And don't tell me they are and cite stats because McVay routinely masks their weaknesses with that scheme. Check out their tape on third and long and otherwise known-pass scenarios. They're gun shy from a play calling aspect which tells you they know it. And when they set up a pocket where the QB needs time for the routes to develop it's wild west back there.
Better passing game weapons secondly. They used to have 3x wideouts who could hurt you. Now they have 2. Most teams can do a good job on two if they focus pass. Their TEs are inconsistent. Fans say "they need to get the TEs the ball" but that requires them to get open. Tape shows it. There's a couple times per game the QB will miss the TE but overall it's not like our TEs are running all over open when Goff's eyes are on them.
And btw I think the Rams did a heck of a job to produce this roster while pulling off the transition from two big money offensive pieces. They still haven't replaced Gurley. This is a good team. But for them to get back to elite they're going to need better players. We need a Center and a better WR3, and could use a TE threat. Are those on the roster? Maybe actually. But they're not gonna help us this year that's a next year possibility for Jefferson and Hopkins (both of whom were advanced in the passing game imagine that).
It's been a good year. I don't think we're gonna get too far but hey never know there's hope. But there's no way I can look at this offense and think most of our problems don't start with personnel.
I agree in principle but I am not sure about the details there. I agree with the red bit, but I am not sure about the blue bit.
The way it looks, as the season progressed, the Rams did become fairly proficient in third down conversions. Right now one stat site has Goff ranked 10th on 3rd and long [
stats.washingtonpost.com] and 3rd on 3rd and short [
stats.washingtonpost.com] though middle of the pack on third and medium [
stats.washingtonpost.com] . Another cite has the Rams as a team ranked 10th in 3rd down conversion percentage [
www.teamrankings.com] ... and if I read NFL.com right, they have the Rams as 7th on 3rd down conversions [
www.nfl.com]
I'm going off of what I see zn. It happens way too much, plenty of examples of McVay settling for a safe play and then a punt to re-circle the wagons on offense. He can coachspeak all he wants but he doesn't trust this passing game.
Here's a nice article about that, and recent, with some good analysis. But again to me it's pretty clear without diving into the stats.

I debated DaSilva personally about all the fallacies and omissions in that argument. DaSilva did not even know that the Rams, and Goff are ranked high in 3rd down conversions and that Goff is ranked high in percentage of TDs per attempts inside the 10. I think he did a bit of "magic" mind-reading with that argument and just leapt to conclusions. The fact that a few times McVay showed a conservative streak in certain situations (and this is not the only way in which McV does that) tells us nothing about his "trust" of Goff.
I mean he's the coach, he can't be so blind that he doesn't know his own qb is good on 3rd down,
including 3rd and long, and good in the redzone.
I had a very spirited exchange with DaSilva over all that and I did not get one response that wasn't just him repeating what he said in the first place. He didn't listen to or weigh all the evidence I provided about how solid Goff is in those situations. It was kind of like a "but this one goes to 11" type argument.
