You can't go 1 for 9 on your last 9 drives and stop Mahomes. Giving him the ball back after 3 plays just so you burn 2 minutes of clock instead of 30 seconds of clock won't matter much. 5 of the 9 drives were 3 plays or less.
Keep giving Mahomes the ball back even with this great defense will be a disaster. Remember the 1985 Bears Monday night football game. Greatest defense of all time got it handled to them by the Dolphins that night. I know that is just one isolated example but it is hard to stop these teams that play like the Chiefs. That style of play rules in today's NFL and the best way to stop Mahomes is to extend drives, move the ball, and continue scoring.
Not with this team we have this year. We aren't the GSOT rams and we are not the 2017, 2018 rams. We can't sling the ball downfield anymore. We don't get the big plays from vertical passing. We are getting our plays from short to intermediate. We also have a very capable defense. If we are up by three touchdowns to the chiefs in the 4th quarter I'm ok with trying to chew up some clock and be a little conservative. I'm not going to force the offense to stop running the ball when we are at 150+yds either. It's smart football if we can keep mahomes off the field, but you have to do what we did yesterday control the ball and extend drives. In the 4th quarter we were on cruise control and we could have been a little more aggressive but why risk it against a team that wasn't showing any life.
Who went 1-9 on our drives what is that from? We had 3 three and out drives in the 4th quarter yesterday. We absolutely owned the first three quarters of that game. We had Two punts first half none in the 1st qtr. And are 1st punt came in in about 4 min mark of the 2nd. We didn't punt again until the 4th quarter when we were nursing a 21 point lead.
