The Rams' ST units were outstanding - at the bread-and-butter stuff and the "trick" stuff - when the team as a whole was at its best. Bones was special not simply because of the particular stuff he dialed up, but because he brought a "difference-maker" mindset to special teams play. He coached aggressive special teams - going for punt blocks (what Littleton was first known for), for fake punts... Sure, teams need "special" ST play more when the O & D are relatively weak than when they're strong, but doing everything you reasonably can to make them a real contributor to winning football is just smart, right?
