How often do teams go out and get the next Tannehill?
It just doesn’t happen but rarely.
You want Fitzpatrick or Foles? Or Cousins? Or Garoppolo? You want to pay Dak $40M/yr? How about Bridgewater? That’s what’s usually out there in FA.
And in McVay's offense, many of those guys COULD be the next Tannehill. That's my point. This offense will make QB's look better than they are and if what we're getting from Goff is just better than average but not elite, then I'd rather save the money and add more talent/depth in other areas.
Luckily, Goff is still young and still improving so maybe he can get to elite status at some point. But I have my doubts as much as I feel like McVay is having to protect him with the playcalling. It's a double-edged sword with all of these short, one read, "easy" throws. On the one hand, those are good for getting a QB in rhythm and some confidence but on the other hand, they seem like plays that we have to run for Goff to have success. Goff's pre-snap reads and recognition seem to be fine but I'm still not confident in his off schedule adjustments. I'm not even sure about his progressions. Too often, it looks like he panics when the first read isn't there.
If they can keep an unpredictable mix of short routes and naked boots mixed into the offense, that's fine. But I worry that they have been more of a crutch because of Goff's limitations so I hope I'm wrong about that.
